A zebrafish nanos-related gene is essential for the development of primordial germ cells

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that a reduction in the level of Nanos1 protein, encoded by nanos-like (nanos1) gene in zebrafish embryos, affects proper migration and survival of primordial germ cells. Furthermore, Nanos1 activity is confined to germ cells and is involved in RNA localization, stability, and translocation.
