Article Abstract:
Measuring efficiency of selection in plant breeding depends on whether expected genetic gain or likelihood of obtaining the desired lines is used. The new index is the ratio of the probability of achieving the desired genetic gain in a target population to the cost expected to get that gain. Monte Carlo simulations of mass selection show the index solves some optimization problems not otherwise amenable to solution.

Article Abstract:
Some species of European black poplar in France are more resistant to foliar rust than others. No species was found to be completely resistant, with partial resistance split into epidemiological components. Up to 20% of resistance variation was found between the 9 regions studied, and up to 22% between stands.

The Elliptic Frontier desceptors and principal component analysis (EF-PCA) is used in the quantitative evaluation of the Primula sieboldii are discussed. The results reveal that the petal shape features for the four principal components (PCs) have high heritability.
