Article Abstract:
A suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) approach to identify strain- and clade-specific genes in two well-characterized laboratory strains, Synechococcus sp. strain WH8103 and Synechococcus sp. strain WH7803 is used. It is found that approximately 9% of the WH8103 sequences are potential false-positive sequences, which demonstrates that caution should be used when this technology is used to assess genomic differences in genetically similar bacterial strains.

Article Abstract:
The effect of iron on the culture growth and ultrastructure of the major strains of Acaryochloris marina is investigated. These high-iron cultures have showed an ultrastructure with thylakoid stacks that resemble traditional cyanobacteria and also a novel reversal in the pigment ratios of the photosystem II signature components chlorophyll a and phenophytina.

Article Abstract:
Large variation in the morphology, toxicity, and maximum population growth rates for 32 Microcystis aeruginosa strains isolated from 12 lakes are documented. Growth rates and mean colony sizes varied significantly across strains and are positively correlated.
