Article Abstract:
A research was conducted to study the use of different gels for the removal of humic contaminants from DNA extracts of environmental samples. The environmental samples used were woodland soil, hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, aquatic sediment and aquatic biofilm. Aliquots of each sample were loaded onto column types while effluents were collected after centrifugation. Results showed sepharose 4B spin columns to be capable of purifying DNAs from a variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

Article Abstract:
An arsenite-oxidizing Hydrogenobaculum strain is isolated from a geothermal spring that was previously shown to contain microbial populations engaged in arsenite oxidation. The isolate is sensitive to both arsenite and arsenate and behaves as an obligate chemolithoautograph that uses H2 as its sole energy source and has an optimum temperature of 55 to 60 degrees and an optimum pH of 3.0.

Article Abstract:
The microbial oxidation of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are studied. It is shown that Sb(III) oxidation is catalyzed by a pathway that is different from that used for As(III) and they both have the ability to oxidize metalloids.
