Article Abstract:
A research work to develop a panel of candidate peptide biomarkers along with measurement reagents that are independent of the analytical technology used in the clinical lab to determine cancer biomarkers is presented. As new classes of clinical mass spectrometry (MS) technologies emerge and methodologies such as immune-MS become evaluated and developed for routine clinical use, researchers are more optimistic about the emergence and newfound appreciation of the circulatory peptidome that would have a positive impact on patient care.

Article Abstract:
The surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight (SELDI-TOF) mass spectrometry would prove to be an important method in diagnosing cancer at an early stage, however, critics maintained that the process lacked sensitivity needed to detect low-abundance proteins. Three different experimental methods were combined, and compared to develop a nonredundant list of proteins in human plasma and serum, finding that no single platform provided complete coverage of the proteome.

Article Abstract:
A method, based on stable isotope-labeled amino acids in cell culture, is developed that has combined large-scale quantitative proteomics with a technique for time-labeling cell cultures. The dynamics of growth factor signaling is characterized by stimulating isotope-tagged batches of cells with epidermal growth factor for different time intervals and the combined lysate is analyzed by using mass spectrometry.
