A phosphonate-induced gene which promotes Penicillium-mediated bioconversion of cis-propenylphosphonic acid to fosfomycin

Article Abstract:

An epoxidase of Penicillium decumbens that converts cis-propenylphosphonic acid (CPA) into the antibiotic fosfomycin has been isolated. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used in detecting proteins induced by CPA. A 31-kDA protein called EpoA was found to be CPA induced and overaccumulated in the strain. The DNA sequence of its gene, epoA, revealed two introns and an open reading frame with a peptide having 227 amino acids. Epoxidation activity increased four times when the gene was subcloned into P. decumbens.

A novel ATP-binding cassette transporter involved in multidrug resistance in the phytopathogenic fungus Penicillium digitatum

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the association between demethylation inhibitor (DMI) resistance and multidrug resistance in the field isolates of the citrus green mold Penicillium digitatum. A gene encoding an ATP-binding cassette transporter for DMI efflux was cloned and characterized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated that the toxicant efflux system supporting Penicillium multidrug resistance participates in the DMI resistance of P. digitatum.

Tandem repeat of a transcriptional enhancer upstream of the sterol 14alpha-demethylase gene (CYP51) in Penicillium digitatum

Article Abstract:

Researchers have discovered that a gene for resistance to demethylation inhibitors in Penicillium digitatum has a 126-bp sequence in the promoter region that is repeated five times in resistant strains but is present only once in sensitive strains. When the gene and the promoter region from the resistant strain is transferred to the sensitive strain, it becomes resistant.
