Article Abstract:
A family of 30 putative receptor genes was isolated from neurons in the rat vomeronasal organ (VNO) through quantitative screening of genomic libraries. Sequence analysis of the genes revealed seven transmembrane domain proteins unrelated to receptors in main olfactory epithelium neurons. Further analysis showed that expression of each gene family is restricted only to a small subpopulation of VNO neurons, suggesting that these genes may encode mammalian pheromone receptors.

Article Abstract:
A novel family of -100 genes that encode seven transmembrane receptors has been determined through the differential screening of cDNA libraries based on individual rat vomeronasal organ (VNO) neurons. Receptor gene expression patterns also reveal that the VNO is arranged in sexually dimorphic and discrete functional units. The units enable pheromone signal segregation for specific neuroendocrine responses and behaviors.

Article Abstract:
Research describes two families of major histocompatibility complex class lb genes, M10 and M1, which are expressed in the basal zone of the vomeronasal organ, the site of pheromone receptor expression. Data indicate that M10 and M1 express V2R pheromone receptor expressing neurons.
