Douglas Fischer, a reporter at the Oakland Tribune conducted an experiment to test the levels of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) fire retardants in the blood of four family members and published the result in the newspaper with the help of Erica Health, who runs an Independent Review Consulting (IRC). In March, the project won an award from the Association of Health Care Journalists.

Gary Rogers, a University of Tennessee dairy scientist is doing research for finding out cow families that have resistance to mastitis, an infection of the udder in cows. Rogers has demonstrated that conductivity is highly correlated with the occurrence of mastitis developing, on a genetic level.
