A mannose-specific adherence mechanism in Lactobacillus plantarum conferring binding to the human colonic cell line HT-29

Article Abstract:

Lactobacillus plantarum strains contain a mannose-specific adhesin that allows adherence to the human colonic cell line HT-29. Binding of bacterial cells to the colonic cells is suppressed by methyl-alpha-D-mannoside and proteinase K. The bacterial cells also agglutinate Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells and erythrocytes, and bind to agarose beads covered with D-mannose. The cell-bound receptors have a carbohydrate nature as the binding is suppressed by periodate treatment of the colonic cells. The adhesin is probably involved in L. plantarum colonization of the colon.

Molecular analysis of the locus responsible for production of plantaricin S, a two-peptide bacteriocin produced by Lactobacillus plantarum LPCO10

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the cloning and sequencing of the genes which encode plantaricin S that was characterized as a two-peptide bacteriocin. Some open reading frames were observed downstream from the plantaricin S operon. Two of these open reading frames appeared similar with the genes which regulated the production of other bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria. Results revealed that an agr-like regulatory system may be involved the bacteriocin production.

Competetive growth of genetically marked malolactic-deficient Lactobacillus plantarum in cucumber fermentations

Article Abstract:

The development of practical procedures for differentially enumerating an decarboxylate malic acid (MDC-) starter culture of Lactobacillus plantarum and the indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) duringcucumber fermentation are discussed. Electroporation, plasmid stability, fluctuation analysis and plating efficiency were used in analyzing the strain. Malic acid-supplemented acidified medium was found to permit growth of indigenous LAB but not of an added MDC- strain.
