Article Abstract:
Linkage analysis in mice homozygous to the autosomal recessive chondrodysplasia (cho) mutation indicates that both the cho gene and the gene that codes for the alpha-1 (XI) chain of cartilage collagen XI localize to chromosome 3. Removal of a cytidine residue from the 570 nt downstream region of cho alpha-1(XI) mRNA translation initiation codon changes the reading frame and induces a premature stop codon. Collagen XI is thus vital for normal development of collagen fibrils and for the arrangement and differentiation of chondrocytes.

Article Abstract:
The role of cell matrix cytoskeletal proteins such as collagen fibrils and monomer collagen in the regulation of cell division was analyzed in arterial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) arrested at the G1 phase of cell division. Cultured SMCs with structural type I collagen such as monomer collagen and polymerized collagen fibrils exhibited a 10-fold reduction in deoxyribonucleotide synthesis. Polymerized collagen also inhibited the activity of cyclin E-associated protein kinase and cyclin-dependent kinase 2.

Article Abstract:
A quantitative model was proposed for cell cycle regulation. The model, which also addresses the problem related with prevention of replication in a single cell cycle, shows that initiation of S phase or mitosis by a cell can be determined not by the qualitative attributes of any specific cyclin-cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) complex, but by the amount of CDK. It illustrates that initiation of S phase occurs with moderate amounts of CDK activity while mitosis occurs with higher amounts.
