Article Abstract:
New methods were developed and used in the laboratory investigation of an outbreak of a respiratory disease in South and Eastern Autralia. Australian strains of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolated from infected humans were analysed by using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysisand by allozyme analysis. Molecular characterizations performed by the two methods were able to identify clones among the isolates screened proving the efficiency of these methods.

Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine different methods of validating formaldehyde decontamination of biological safety cabinets. Results obtained from the decontamination of metal strips injected with poliovirus, Bacillus spp and Mycobacterium bovis spores were compared with the results taken from three biological indicators. Results demonstrate that Attest 1291 biological indicator was the only biological indicator that could assist in the detection of gross decontamination failure.

Article Abstract:
The source, burden and persistence of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in spa pools associated with lung disorders are defined. The genotypic evidence of the persistence of a MAC strain in a spa pool despite standard decontamination procedures is presented.
