Article Abstract:
The study examined the induction of the tod operon in the Pseudomonas putida F1 TVA8 strain during exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) compounds and JP-4 jet fuel constituents. This was done by measuring bacterial bioluminescence on-line in whole cells. The strain TVA8 was produced by constructing and introducing a tod-lux fusion into the P. putida F1 using a transposon delivery system. The high sensitivity of the tod-lux reporter suggests a possible field use applications for bioluminescent reporters.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the use of nonionic surfactants to improve the solubility of polychlorinated biphenyls to reduce the effect of variations in aqueous solubilities of PCB congeners on the induction of the PCB operon. Results suggested that additional bioluminescent reporter strains supporting smaller portions of the promoter area of the biphenyl operon may lead to a better understanding of the regulation of biphenyl operons.

Researchers describe the use of 16S rRNA analysis to determine the amount of Hyphomicrobium in activated sludge in a wastewater treatment system. This organism is an important component of these systems because it can degrade methanol and other hydrocarbons. However, excess amounts can cause poor sludge settling and compaction.
