Article Abstract:
Origination from the mitochondrial rice genome, that of Oryza sativa L., of a thermosensitive genetic male sterility (TGMS)-linked nuclear DNA marker is discussed. The relationship between transferred DNA and tms3 (ital) is discussed relative to an RAPD marker that was inherited as a nuclear marker in a Mendelian way in the tms3 (ital) mapping population, but maternally inherited in other populations. It appears that OPF18(sub.2600) is a mitochondrial genome-derived nuclear marker which cross-hybridizes to cytoplasmic DNA in other breeding lines and that the insertion shows involvement of DNA sequence from mitochondrion to nucleus.

Article Abstract:
Evolutionary genetics of sex expression are discussed based on genetics of adaptive radiation in Hawaiian species of Tetramolopium (Astereaceae). Little has been known about genetic changes involved in origin and diversification of island taxa. The most diverse clade in the genus has monoecious breeding from a change in sex expression in disc florets. The apparent simple genetic change behind sex expression parallels a major evolutionary diverisification in Hawaiian Tetramolopium and may have started the divergence of the novel clade.

Article Abstract:
A diplosporous triploid seed parent was crossed with a sexual diploid E. strigosus pollen parent for producing an F1 of 31 plants for evaluating the function and inheritance of diplospory in Erigeron. Continuous variation in the proportion of diplosporous ovules is observed in tetraploid F1s due to segregating paternal modifiers.
