Article Abstract:
A Drosophila I(kappa)B kinase complex containing DmIKK(beta) and DMIKK(gamma) has been identified. The complex is necessary for Relish cleavage and antibacterial immunity. A yet-to-be-identified I(kappa)B kinase complex is apparently required for Rel protein activation via the Toll signaling pathway.

The Drosophila innate immune response is discussed. It must have an I(kappa)B kinase for antibacterial activity. The ird5 gene has a sequence and phenotype that suggest ird5 to be specifically necessary for the activation of Relish, a Drosophila NF-(kappa)B family member.

Article Abstract:
NF-kappaB signaling pathways in mammalian and Drosophila innate immunity are discussed in this review article. Both similarities and differences are seen in comparisons. Similar pathogen-derived substances activate the innate immune response in both.
