Article Abstract:
2-Phenylethylamine was converted to phenylacetic acid by Escherichia coli K-12 through the action of amine oxidase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. The compound phenylacetic acid is utilized by E. coli K-12 as carbon and energy source. Currently, a second amine oxidase gene is identified which is located near the gene encoding the 2-phenylethylamine oxidase. Results have shown that a gene which encodes a positive regulatory protein required for the expression of amine oxidase and phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase (PAD) gene was located next to the PAD genes.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze Klebsiella pneumoniae-based genes for D-arabinitol and ribitol catabolism. Conventional procedures were utilized to carry out DNA recombinant manipulations while rbt genes were cloned into pFCK1 to sequence the dal genes into pHHL104. The rbt genes were also isolated after the cloning of BamHI fragments into the medium-copy-number vector pHEX3. Results indicated that the dal and rbt genes are non-homologous and were no flanked by long inverted repeat processes.

Article Abstract:
The cloning, partial analysis and expression in Escherichia coli of the Klebsiella pneumoniae 3-hydroxybenzoate catabolic genes are described. The four enzymes necessary for the conversion of 3-hydroxybenzoate to pyruvate and fumarate as well as a positive regulator protein were encoded on a fragment of K. pneumoniae DNA. The presence of the K. pneumoniae 3-hydroxybenzoate catabolic genes afforded E. coli to grow on 3-hydroxybenzoate.
