Genomic subpopulations within the species Pediococcus acidilactici detected by multilocus typing analysis: relationships between pediocin AcH/PA-1 producing and non-producing strains
Article Abstract:
Genome and phylogentic analyses reveal a high degree of genetic polymorphism among Pediococcus acidilactici. Among the seven genotype groups analyzed, three showed a relationship between pediocin production and carbohydrate fermentation pattern.

16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer region sequence variation in Streptococcus thermophilus and related dairy streptococci and development of a multiplex ITS-SSCP analysis for their identification
Article Abstract:
A low but significant variation among the Streptococcus thermophilus strains reveals four different internal transcribed spacer sequences, whose similarity analyses suggest that Streptococcus species are clustered into two main branches. This methodology is employed to construct a multiplex internal transcribed spacer-SSCP species/strain-specific tool to identify dairy streptococci species.

Unusual organization for lactose and galactose gene clusters in Lactobacillus helveticus
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on organization and location of lac genes in Lactobacillus helveticus. The authors describe the identification of partially overlapping genes which encode L. helveticus beta-galactosidase, and a gene encoding lactose permease, and discuss the nucleotide sequence of these genes.
