Temporary collection employees can be hired when looking for replacements of outstanding collectors who leave the company. Hiring transitory collectors prevent decreased work output, delinquencies, rising placements and fees and a lowered staff morale. Steps that must be taken when fielding and employing temporary collection personnel include ascertaining whether outsourcing functions to these employees is beneficial or not, studying the situation in order to determine the conditions needed when hiring permanent collectors, developing a properly outlined aims and objectives, guaranteeing access to information and resources, defining job responsibilities and latitudes, obtaining assurance of commitment from management and of cooperation from staff members, providing the required facilities, developing an accurate method of evaluating results, and hiring the appropriate temporary collection project staff. Overdependence by the temporary employees and management should be avoided.

The growing popularity of managed care poses a number of challenges to healthcare receivables managers. Because the number of managed care contracts is increasing, it is usual for billing and reimbursement specialists to sift through 100 or more contracts to achieve optimal reimbursement. Another challenge is the increasing amount of receivables attributed to the patient. This creates problems for billers and collectors because collecting payments from patients is more time consuming, more labor-intensive and more difficult than collecting from insurance companies. A third challenge is the growing pressure to cut costs so that healthcare receivables managers are forced to do more with less. Some managers are responding to these challenges by outsourcing many of their functions, while others are joining provider-sponsored networks.

Methods to improve the image of the debt collector in media are discussed.A guideline suggests ways to successfully achieve the goal of recovering a client's assets through quality service. Keeping in mind that the job entails interaction with people and maintaining a specific set of goals will significantly contribute to an improved media image. He cites the importance of maintaining a positive image relevant in attracting clientele. Likewise, the advent of technological innovations has greatly increased the efficiency of a collecting agency's operations. However, a major setback brought by advancement in technology in collection practices is the risk of dehumanization. A set of guidelines and principles is proposed to counter this risk.
