Tax reform agenda: what's coming next?

Article Abstract:

Australia's accountants need to become familiar with the provisions of the Goods and Services Tax law. Also, Pay As You Go (PAYG) legislation is in effect, and represents a basic change to federal tax administration. PAYG replaces company instalments and provisional tax, and combines all existing withholding arrangements into one system.

Tax: mapping the reform route

Article Abstract:

Australian accountants can be key players in tax reform debate through the Australian Society of Certified Public Accountants. The Society informs its members of important issues and promotes reform. Two papers regarding tax return elimination and profit alignment provoked the public's interest. Further working papers are planned.

The GST legislation: a never-ending story?

Article Abstract:

The goods and services tax introduced in the Australian Parliament on Dec 2, 1998, will be a difficult task. There have been numerous debates about the passage of the entire tax although some measures were passed on Dec 2. The most dramatic proposed amendments are from the Democratic Party.
