Private business: the Privacy Commissioner has issued guidelines in preparation for new legislation

Australia's Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000, which is due to come into effect on Dec 21, 2001, obliges private sector firms to adhere to principles for collecting, holding, using, disclosing and transferring personal information. The Privacy Commissioner has issued guidelines detailing the contents of the National Privacy Principles on which the legislation is based.
