Article Abstract:
The Pooled Development Fund (PDF) was created by the Australian government in order to increase the availability of venture capital for small and medium-sized businesses. To qualify for investment, Australian companies must have total assets of less than A$50 million. Tax incentives are provided to both PDFs and investors. The Australian government has also adopted measures to improve PDFs as an investment vehicle.

Early preparation is critical for Australian small businesses for the goods and service tax (GST) transition that is currently taking effect. The media, CPA advisers, and seminars are some of the main information sources for preparing for GST. The assurance on appropriate accounting and operating systems are important for GST transition, but Australian small businesses are not, in general, well-prepared for GST.

Micro businesses, which employ less than five employees, are responsible for 25% of the employment in Australia or 1.6 million people in 1996-7. Over 50% of these companies of these businesses were operating before 1992. These companies are expected to have greater difficulties in 1999 than they did in 1998.
