Owners of small and medium firms (SMEs) are generally supportive of environmental protection. However, such firms are less likely to have environmental improvement strategies than larger ones. Outsourcing could be used as a way of overcoming lack of time and expertise among SME owners. In Australia, there is a large network of small business advisory services.

Changes to the capital gains tax (CGT) regime in Australia offer advantages for small and medium firms (SMEs). There are general CGT concessions, along with four specific concessions for SMEs. These include the small business rollover and the small business retirement exemption.
