Article Abstract:
The Privacy and American Business, a program initiated by the nonprofit Center for Social and Legal Research, will hold a meeting regarding data protection contracts and laws needed by US companies operating in EU countries. A EU Directive requires an adequate privacy regime consisting of a national regulatory law that covers the private sector as well as a national regulatory agency that would implement the aforementioned law. Without such a regime, American companies with EU operations would be barred from transferring human resources records on employees and managers, and personal data on customers to the US. However, they are permitted to forge contractual arrangements with EU nations that satisfy EU standards and feature allowable remedies and procedures under the contract. The meeting, which will take place on Jul 31, 1998 in Washington, D.C, will educate participants on how to implement these contractual approaches.
