A number of changes have been made to the termination of employment elements of the Australia's Workplace Relations Act 1996 by the Workplace Relations Amendment (Termination of Employment) Bill 2000, which came into force on Aug 30, 2001. These changes include the elimination of some potential 'constructive dismissal' claims.

Issues are presented concerning the 450,000 Australian dollar damages awarded to an employee who contracted cancer following exposure to tobacco smoke in the workplace. The implications for smoking in public places is discussed.
