Many credit managers realize that it is both better and less expensive to prevent credit fraud than to react to fraud. One way to prevent fraud is to develop a fraud prevention program which utilizes computer software to help trained employees identify credit risks. J.C. Penney's is one company which has had good results with its on-line evaluation program: credit applications are entered electronically, and the computer system can evaluate applications and tag any application with certain types of 'suspect' information. Additionally, J.C. Penney depends on employee evaluation to prevent fraud.

Custom Processing Services, Inc. is a new company which has developed software for tiny portable computers to be used by the credit industry. The hardware used is a battery operated Sharp 1250A which is pocket sized. An agreement was recently reached with the International Consumer Credit Association to supply software for consumer credit grantors. There are two installment lending programs which operate by asking simple questions of the user. Speed and size are the key features.

North Island Federal Credit Union (San Diego, CA) has achieved excellent growth with the help of new computer and phone systems. The credit union installed a Hewlett-Packard HP 300 computer which was later upgraded to a Series 950. The Credit Union also installed a CALL-24 system allowing customers to conduct transactions over the phone. North Island Federal Credit Union has added over 300 companies and associations to its customer list since 1983.
