Company boards: looking for balance

Article Abstract:

Boyden, an executive search firm, did a survey of annual reports to attenpt to rate the skills and abilities of corporate board members. While inconclusive, the survey indicated that boards in the resource and finance sectors recruited people with experience in the same or nearly the same line of business. Most boards seek management skills, then financial and legal skills; technical skills are only sought in the resource sector. Marketing and human resource skills were less represented.

National Council report

Article Abstract:

The Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants' National Council met in May 1999. New councilors were welcomed while other councilors retired. Membership regulations, professional conduct rules and the financial adviser specialization issues were reviewed. The Council plans to create and finance a research and development facility.

An attempt is made to learn the views of the directors of ASX 100 companies on the impact of the Corporate Governance Council (CGC) principles. The directors feel that government regulation cannot prevent all corporate collapses, which occurs as a result of several other factors.
