Ches Baragwanath and Tony Harris were the auditors-general of the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales respectively. The correct recording of leases, improved reporting standards, and accrual accounting practices are among Baragwanath's achievements. The need for higher ethical standards in the New South Wales government was the major problem that Harris feels he had to deal with in his tenure of office.

The Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants presented its 1999 Public Sector Awards at its conference in April. Accountants in the public sector won awards for showing leadership, sharing ideas, redesigning aboriginal financial reporting systems and developing new training courses. The awards are presented every two years.

Consolidation of Australian accounting firms is expected to be a major challenge after the year 2000. There is concern that some companies may disappear as a result of consolidation. A lack of loyal clients and the inability to provide value-added services could cause the elimination of smaller businesses.
