Article Abstract:
Fifteen automobile racing drivers were sent to the hospital from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May 1992, causing renewed concern about the safety of the track. The speedway was constructed in 1909, and the winner of the first race there averaged 74.59 mph.

A intermediate automobile racing series, called American Racing Series, was created in the mid-1980s for drivers who hoped to enter IndyCar racing. Later called Indy Lights, the series also adopted new cars in 1993. A drive in one of the cars is described.
