The two Indy 500 competitions brimmed with high-level racing action despite United States Auto Club's officiating errors. Arie Luyendyk, the Flying Dutchman, reigned both in Indianapolis and Texas becoming the champion of the first Indy race ever held at the Texas Motor Speedway.

The 1997 Indy 200 at Walt Disney World marked the entry of the Indy Racing League's new chassis and engine configurations. The event was won by Eddie Cheever who drove an Aurora engine powered Indy car. Cheever, however, did not win a single lap of the event.
