Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) organized DARPA Grand Challenge, which is a race for driverless vehicles across the Mojave Desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where the winner would win a million dollars. The vehicle has to complete a 142-mile course within a 10-hour time limit, all without any human intervention, by following specific GPS waypoints.

Stock-car race marketer NASCAR plans to release a computer version of its Winston Cup tour. The NASCAR Racing Online Series (NROS) envisions an Internet broadcast of a multimedia race allowing up to 40 player-drivers at a time, through the Total Entertainment Network. Three other race programs are also profiled.

Papyrus has introduced a new software program which simulates racing in the IndyCar circuit. Called IndyCar Racing, the new program is a far cry from the real thing but it is still the best car racing simulation available today.
