Two separate 500-mile races, the Indy 500 and the US 500, were held on Memorial Day weekend 1996 as a result of protests against the Indy Racing League (IRL) by Championship Auto Racing Team (CART) drivers. IRL and CART may never come to an agreement, and the two races will probably co-exist.

The 1999 CART FedEx National Championship automobile race in Fontana, CA, was won by Jimmy Vasser in his Reynard 981-Honda automobile. The race was characterized by 250 laps around a 2,029 mile racetrack. The average speed clocked at the event was 153.785 mph.

Mario Andretti drove in his last race at Laguna Seca Raceway in 1994, and then retired from automobile racing. Andretti's retirement came after 36 years of racing, and a string of victories that began in 1958 and a string of championships that began in 1974.
