Automakers are expressing a growing interest in gas-discharge lighting systems as they provide more illumination using less energy. The greatest hindrance to the widespread use of such systems is their high cost but many believe that increased production will soon bring prices down.

The phasing out of R-12 refrigerant will mean an inconvenience for many drivers, as switching to the new, more environmentally-safe HFC-134a refrigerant is not always practical. R-12 damages the ozone layer, and production will be stopped at the end of 1995.
