A driver at Bonneville describes how his Firebird veered off the course and flipped over after he exceeded the speed record of 222.581 mph. Aerodynamic lift and a lack of traction contributed to the crash. The driver hopes that using more ballast, different tires and roof flaps will improve stability.

The Speed Week competition in the salt flats can be a dangerous event, because the loose soil and cracks create poor traction. In Aug 1992, a modified Mazda RX-7 spun out of control when it lifted off the ground while traveling at 235 miles per hour.
