From the worst to best: NASCAR takes the lead in safety with a $50 million commitment

Article Abstract:

NASCAR takes the lead in safety as its Research and Development Center in Concord is involved in about 70 safety-related projects all financed by a $50 million, five-year budget from NASCAR. Gary Nelson and his engineering team work in a 61,000-square-foot, $10 million building which houses a powertrain research lab, with room for a future engine dyno, and a secure storage area and features a computer numerically controlled machining room, a modeling lab and a special surface plate equipped with a ROMER CimCore giant CMM known as GridLOK.

T.Taylor Warren, a motor-racing photographer describes the accident which he viewed at Daytona in the 200-mile Automobile Racing Club of America event at Daytona where a car driven by Blake Feese lost control on pit road. Warren shoots NASCAR Nextel Cup races and sells his photos to Southern MotoRacing, a biweekly periodical published by Hank Schoolfield.
