David slays Goliath

Rookie Indy car driver Jim Guthrie won the Phoenix 200 in Mar 23, 1997 beating Indy Racing League favorite Tony Stewart by 0.854 sec. Only nine of the 22 entries finished the second-slowest race in Indy history. Guthrie drove his unsponsored Dallara chasis powered by an Oldsmobile Aurora engine.

The 82nd Indianapolis 500

Article Abstract:

Eddie Cheever won the 82nd Indianapolis 500 automobile race on May 24, 1998. He has been credited with the fastest all-time race lap at the Speedway, 236.103 mph, which he accomplished in 1996. Cheever is known to be the first driver/owner to win the event since 1977.

IRL: King Kenny

Article Abstract:

The Indy Racing League (IRL) overall championship was won by Kenneth Brack. The Swede will defend his crown beginning Jan 24, 1999, when the new IRL racing season kicks off although rumors are circulating around that he will leave the IRL for Formula 1 or CART.
