Col. Craig T. Reap's 212 highway patrol officers oversee 145,388 square miles of Montana under a 'basic rule' allowing any 'careful and prudent' speed during daytime driving instead of a 65 ot 75 m.p.h. limit. Reap and several civilian residents comment on the uses and effects of the law.

The best roads for car travel in the southeastern US include Route 49/281 in Alabama, Route 14 in Arkansas, Route 2/52 in Georgia, Route 30/40 in Kentucky and Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi. Many of the roads also are historical, providing drivers with images of the Civil War.
