The future of ponycars is in doubt, because safety, emissions, and fuel-economy standards are becoming more strict. General Motors and Ford are considering design changes to make ponycars more efficient. Trucks and sport-utility vehicles are an alternative to ponycars.

A safety controversy over the 1973-87 GMC and Chevrolet pickup trucks has involved General Motors Corp in about 100 lawsuits. The fuel systems, mounted on the outside of the frame rails, are said to be prone to fires in side-impact crashes.
