Vintage cars from the 1940s and 1950s have become intensely popular among the nation's auto enthusiasts. Such cars include the 1946 Chrysler Town and Country Convertible, the 1949 Mercury Coupe, the 1949 Buick Roadmaster, the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air and the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado.

Article Abstract:

The engineering department at the University of California at Davis is involved in several gasoline-saving and emissions-control projects. Some of the school's vehicles, and alterations on a Geo Metro and Honda Civic VX are described. Both cars eventually achieved over 100 mpg.

A visit to the Tire Rack Solo II National Championships of the SCCA in Topeka, KS, is described. The autocross racing takes place without practice runs, so the ritual of 'walking the course' becomes important. The activities of driver T.C. Kline are followed.
