1996: faster but not deadlier

Article Abstract:

Unofficial figures on traffic fatalities in 1996 do not support the argument made by safety advocates that higher speed limits would increase traffic fatalities. These figures indicate that fatalities fell 3% from 41,858 in 1995 to 40,734 in 1996.

Csere left Ford Motor Co as an engineer to become a journalist for Car & Driver, and eventually became technical editor. He first ingratiated himself with the magazine's staff when he was their crew chief for the Nelson Ledges Longest Day race.
