The international space treaty regime in the globalization era

Article Abstract:

Some people in the US space community feel that the Outer Space Treaty is outdated and hence the US should withdraw from the treaty. However, the Department of Defense's General Counsel published An Assessment of International Legal Issues, which clearly refutes that the treaties are out of date as it supports the US' national security, commercial and environmental interests during the era of globalization.

The debate over the type of military functions that are permitted or should be permitted have restarted with the articles and policy statements on the military uses of space. The debate over the use of space control, space - based missile defense and space - enabled conventional attacks has been going on for many years.

All along the watchtower: Safeguarding American space dominance

Article Abstract:

The US General accounting office in 2003 suggested that space systems be designated a 'critical national infrastructure' as the nation's space assets have become integrated in our society. The placement of weapons in space should be judged by their power to protect our space, troops and most importantly our citizens.
