Article Abstract:

The major technological barriers to reaching a space-faring civilization and approaches to breaching those barriers are described. They include the lack of affordable transportation to space, poor launch vehicle safety records and the lack of the life support technology.

The main barriers to human settlement of space are the poor safety record for space transportation, the substantial cost and the absence of the life support technology required for permanent human settlement.
