Satellite imagery may now be used to monitor refugee activity in remote parts of the planet. Reconnaissance satellites formerly used by the military have now been turned over to civilian entities so that the technology used to monitor enemy activity may now be used for other applications.

The European Space Agency embarked on its longest manned space project when German astronaut Thomas Reiter boarded Russia's Mir space station. Reiter is scheduled to spend 135 days in space, living and working with his Russian counterparts.

Arianespace plans to launch its new Ariane 5 reusable space vehicle on its maiden flight on Jan. 17, 1996. It was originally scheduled for Nov. 29, 1995 but an accident at the Guiana Space Center on May 5, 1995 forced the rescheduling.
