Mars observed! Booms with a view

Article Abstract:

A new Mars probe, the Mars Observer, will be launched on September, 1992 to continue US exploration which has ceased after the final Viking project. The new probe is fitted with new technology and instruments that are manufactured in different countries making the Mars mission an international venture.

From shield to sieve: Earth's ozone shield is slip-sliding away

Article Abstract:

High levels of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) were discovered over the Northern Hemisphere in Feb 1992. This alarming discovery shows the importance of phasing out CFC production and use, since under present conditions, EPA estimates an 800,000 rise in the number of cancer-related deaths by 2092.

Lifting the veil

Article Abstract:

The space probe Magellan has greatly benefited scientists in the study of Venus by gathering many new facts. But there is still much more to learn and the future of the space probe remains cloudy due to lack of funding for 1993.
