The ground-based observations led by Michael Mumma of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and also the European Agency's Mars Express orbiter have traced the signs of the gas Methane on Mars. The new evidence pointed to blocks of ice lurking just beneath the surface of the equatorial region of Mars and has led to speculation of life on Mars.

Early astronomers such as Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler made accurate observations of Mars despite the lack of sophisticated instruments. By drawing from the experiences of these people, today's astronomers to create designs for the development of advanced instruments.

Space exploration will continue only if it is affordable. The design and construction of cheaper, more efficient space probes and manned spacecraft will enable the human race to explore and eventually colonize the outer reaches of the solar system.
