University of Arizona's John S. Lewis proposed mining mineral resources from at the 1992 International Space Development Conference. For example, water extracted from asteroids can be used as a rocket propellant. Lewis feels that the study of non-terrestial materials will be the key to space exploration.

Planetary scientists have long wanted to observe Jupiter's moons, but their distance from Earth made this difficult. New observations by deep space probes have provided scientists with a better look at these satellites, especially Io, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto.

Astronomers have observed around 5,000 of over 500,000 asteroids that orbit the sun. Studies that may yield clues to the origins of our solar system also show their use as sources of ores for building space colonies and future space explorations.
