The discovery of several large planetary objects in the solar system has given the impression that planet formation is a normal occurrence in the universe. Considering the existence of life on Earth and the ingredients necessary to produce it, there is a great possibility of life elsewhere.

Implications of the bacteria-like structures found on a Martian rock were the subject of the symposium 'Life in the Universe: What Might Martian Fossils Tell Us?' The possibilities of extraterrestrial life and arguments for manned exploration of Mars were addressed by several speakers.

Man's knowledge of life began from the vantage point of his experience on Earth. As man begins his journey in the search for life outside his planet, the only one that is presently known to contain life, it is important to note the variety of places where it is currently found.
