Article Abstract:

Kathak, a classical dance form originating in northern India, portrays sex roles in a fluid context. The Hindu version of gender is too complex for simple duality, and some sects teach that spiritual essence can only be discovered by transcending the social limitations of gender. Kathak idealizes male and female attributes, but does not limit any character to a single gender.

The historical periodization that marks the changing patronage in Kathak as it moved from the royal courts to state and further to corporate sponsorship as well as its evolution from a traditional practice in the pre-colonial and colonial periods to a national art form of modern India are presented here.
