Article Abstract:

The trademark regionalist and modernist Northern California style of architecture in the mid-20th century is studied through an exploration of several houses built during the time. Small-scale residential structures using local and natural materials, and yet dignified are the legacy of modernist architecture, but with the coming of the digital revolution, there is promise of contemporary Modernism in Northern Californian architecture.

The world out of clay: Stan Bitters

Article Abstract:

Stan Bitters successfully transformed clay into an architectural building material from a decorative material in the mid-20th century. Best known for his massive clay relief walls for Duncan Industries and imperial Savings and Loan building in Fresno, California, he has designed fountains, murals, sculptures and planters from clay, which he considers to be environmental ceramics.

Napier and Wellington: New Zealand

Article Abstract:

The cities of Napier and Wellington in New Zealand were shaken by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in and economic crisis in 1931 and rose from the debris as a museum of Art Deco. In the 1980s, the Art Deco Trust was born to preserve the monuments of the city which organizes the Annual Art Deco week each February on the anniversary of the earthquake.
