Article Abstract:
Sense of place is an individual perception rather than an objective quality that can be captured in a photograph. Language and the art of photography imbue a landscape with a sense of place only to the extent that they inspire a satisfaction of a person's need to feel that security. Human society functions by such recognitions of security as sense of place even if the recognition is merely subjective and socially agreed upon rather than real.

Article Abstract:
A photo essay examines the influence of landscape on a person's life. The daily experience of landscape becomes a platform in the writer's life, although it is not as dramatic as Niagara Falls or the Sahara desert. The landscape is the same fields, the same woods, and the same pale beaches consistently witnessed from season to season. The landscape connects with the soul and those connections to the physical world elevate the self.

Article Abstract:
Rural landscapes have been chronicled throughout American history, including modern photography with its views on country living. Economic productivity emphasized by colonial painters was replaced by economic despair during the Great Depression and an interest in poverty. As agriculture has become a pursuit of a dwindling minority, new values emerge in photography such as social alienation and a new romantic image of country life.
