Romeo revisited

Article Abstract:

Kent Stowell, co-artistic director, Pacific Northwest Ballet, turned the tale of Romeo and Juliet into a melodrama of romance and love employing Tchaikovsky's music. Stowell develops a mood of tenderness and melancholy in the impassioned bedroom sequence just before Romeo's flight to Mantua. Stowell breaks the drama into two acts instead of the usual three to make events more dramatic, ending the first act with the couple's marriage, the second with their death.

In memoriam: Lincoln Kirstein

Article Abstract:

Lincoln Kirstein showed the unchanging side of ballet through his operation of ballet companies and his many writings on the subject. His books on dance history were outstanding for their new information and rare illustrations. In his book, 'Movement and Metaphor,' Kirstein discussed 50 ballets in their technical, historical, psychological and political contexts. Lincoln also supported Nijinsky as a choreographer and George Balachine's work.

Aboard the Royal Swedish Ballet jubilee express

Article Abstract:

The Royal Swedish Ballet has marked its 225th year with distinctive performances. The programs departed from classical technique and stage design, and featured stylized movements, unusual costuming, scores by prominent contemporary composers and backdrops painted by famous artists. Other events included exhibitions of archive photographs, prints, and costumes.
