Article Abstract:

Oregon Ballet Theatre, as a barrage of publicity and advertising informed the citizens of Portland, is the first professional company on the West coast to dance George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, which it did, bring the city, as was also stressed, a New York holiday tradition. Portland has a connection with The Nutcracker much older than New York's in June 1934 William Christensen staged excerpts with Janet Reed in an odd elfin costume.

The Martha Graham Dance Company has performed Cave of the Heart in Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, where it was the company's first performance in Portland in thirty-plus years. The White Bird Presents brought the dance company to perform and of the six ballets programmed, which included three solos, Cave of the Heart was the best performed.
